Why You Don’t Need to Wait Months for Treatment
For many people, wisdom teeth are responsible for the first significant dental pain they ever experience.
Unlike tooth decay or gum disease, which can often be prevented with good oral hygiene and regular dental visits, wisdom tooth problems usually occur because there simply isn’t enough room in the jaw for these final adult teeth to emerge properly.
Wisdom teeth typically appear between the ages of 17 and 25. As they begin to erupt, they can become trapped beneath the gum or grow at an angle, causing pain, swelling and infection.
For many young adults, this often happens at the worst possible time.
Please note: Wisdom tooth removal fees are provided as a guide only. Following a comprehensive consultation with Dr Vijay Bhargava (£95), you will receive a personalised treatment plan and detailed quotation based on your individual clinical needs.
Why Wisdom Tooth Pain Often Affects Students
We regularly see patients in their late teens and early twenties who are studying for university exams, completing dissertations, preparing for professional qualifications or starting their careers.
A painful wisdom tooth can be surprisingly debilitating.
Patients often report:
- Throbbing pain at the back of the mouth
- Difficulty concentrating
- Poor sleep due to discomfort
- Pain when eating
- Swelling of the jaw or face
- Recurrent infections
- Difficulty opening the mouth
When you’re trying to revise for finals, attend lectures or start a new job, persistent dental pain can have a real impact on everyday life.
The Problem with Waiting
Many patients assume they must join a lengthy waiting list before having their wisdom tooth removed.
Unfortunately, waiting while experiencing repeated infections can be frustrating and uncomfortable.
Current NHS waiting times for wisdom tooth removal can be several months depending on location, with many patients facing waits of around 14 weeks before treatment can be carried out.
That’s over three months of recurring pain, swelling and disruption to daily life.
Why Do Wisdom Teeth Cause Problems?
Wisdom teeth are the last adult teeth to develop.
Over thousands of years, human jaws have become smaller, but we still develop the same number of teeth. As a result, there is often insufficient space for wisdom teeth to erupt normally.
When a wisdom tooth becomes trapped, known as an impacted wisdom tooth, it can cause:
- Infection around the gum
- Swelling and discomfort
- Food trapping
- Tooth decay
- Damage to neighbouring teeth
- Cysts around the tooth
- Recurrent episodes of pain
For some patients, symptoms come and go. For others, the pain can become severe and require urgent treatment.

How Much Does Wisdom Tooth Removal Cost?
One of the biggest myths we hear is:
“I thought it would cost over £1,000.”
In reality, wisdom tooth removal can often be carried out from around £600, depending on the complexity of the procedure and whether the tooth is fully impacted.
During your consultation, Dr Bhargava will explain exactly what treatment is required and provide a clear written estimate before any treatment begins.
What Happens During Treatment?
Stage 1 – Consultation and Assessment
30–45 minutes
Your appointment will include:
- Discussion of your symptoms
- Clinical examination
- Digital X-rays
- Assessment of the position of the wisdom tooth
- Discussion of treatment options
- Written treatment plan and costs
Many patients can have treatment scheduled immediately after this appointment.
Stage 2 – Wisdom Tooth Removal
30–60 minutes
Most wisdom teeth can be removed comfortably using local anaesthetic.
For more complex impacted wisdom teeth, a small surgical procedure may be required. Dr Bhargava will carefully remove the tooth while ensuring you remain comfortable throughout.
Patients generally feel pressure rather than pain during treatment.
Stage 3 – Recovery
First 3–7 days
It is normal to experience:
- Mild discomfort
- Swelling
- Bruising
- Some restriction in opening
Most patients manage comfortably with routine pain relief and return to normal daily activities within a few days.
Stage 4 – Healing
2–6 weeks
The gum tissue usually heals quickly, with the extraction site continuing to strengthen over the following weeks.
For more complex surgical extractions, healing may take slightly longer, but patients are typically back to normal activities long before complete healing has occurred.
